With No. 11 Carolina’s 82–69 victory Wednesday over No. 7 Oklahoma, the Tar Heels have already equaled their Quad 1 win total from last season.
The Tar Heels have won two of five Quad 1 games this season after they went 2–11 last season, which was a big part of why they didn’t make the NCAA tournament field. The other Quad 1 victory this season came 100–92 on Nov. 29 against No. 8 Tennessee (NET ranking of 6).
The win over the Sooners in the Jumpman Invitational in Charlotte jumped UNC in the NET rankings from 37 to 29 and dropped Oklahoma from 7 to 20.
Carolina’s setback against Villanova in the Bahamas is solidified as a “good loss.” The Wildcats moved up four spots to 41 after their 68–66 victory over Creighton. The same is true for No. 5 UConn, even though the Huskies lost Wednesday 75–60 at Seton Hall because they only dropped two spots in the NET rankings to 7.
NCAA quadrant system
Quadrant 1 (UNC is 6–8): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC is 5–0): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC is 8–0): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC is 5–0): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower
The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.
After the Dec. 29 Quad 4 home game against Charleston Southern (340), Carolina plays three consecutive road Quad 1 games: Jan. 2 against Pittsburgh (38), Jan. 6 against No. 18 Clemson (12) and Jan. 10 against N.C. State (63).
