How do you improve your NET ranking when playing the worst team on your schedule? Win the game by 45 points.
That’s what No. 9 North Carolina did with its 105–60 Quad 4 victory Friday over Charleston Southern as the Tar Heels rose to a season-high NET ranking of 20, up five spots from before the game, while sinking the Bucs 11 spots to 348 out of 362.
The NET is full of surprises, though, as the Tar Heels fell a notch to 21 with the Sunday update.
UNC (9–3, 1–0 ACC) briefly moved ahead of No. 16 Duke (8–3, 0–1), which dropped to 21 in the NET before moving up to 20 in the Sunday update after the Blue Devils’ 106–69 Saturday win over Queens.
No. 18 Clemson (11–1, 1–0), which UNC visits at noon on Saturday, has the best NET in the ACC at 8, followed by Duke (20) and UNC (21).
The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.
NCAA quadrant system
Quadrant 1 (UNC is 6–8): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC is 5–0): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC is 8–0): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC is 5–0): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower
The Tar Heels’ NET ranking promises to get even higher if it can bank Quad 1 victories at 7 p.m. Tuesday (ESPN) at Pittsburgh (9–3, 0–1; NET ranking of 41), Saturday at Clemson and at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, (ESPN) at N.C. State (9–3, 1–0; 68).
Under the current NET rankings, UNC will have three consecutive Quad 1 games in February when the Tar Heels have home games against Duke on Feb. 3 and Clemson on Feb. 6, and visit Miami (10–2, 1–0; NET ranking of 58) on Feb. 10. After that, the only Quad 1 games would be road games against Virginia on Feb. 24 and Duke on March 9.
That would also improve Carolina’s likely NCAA tournament seeding as well. According to Bracket Matrix, which aggregates dozens of bracket projections, the Tar Heels went into the weekend projected to be a No. 4 seed.
