Jerod Haase, a former Carolina assistant coach, was off to a tough start in his eighth season as Stanford’s head coach but finished 2023 with a bang.
Freshman guard Kanaan Carlyle scored 25 points as the unranked Cardinal scored a school-record 16 3-pointers and stunned No. 4 Arizona despite 23 points from Caleb Love.
Haase, an assistant coach under Coach Roy Williams from 1999 to 2012, first at Kansas and then at UNC, got a victory over a top-5 team for a third consecutive season after topping No. 4 Arizona 88–79 last season and No. 5 USC 75-69 in the 2021–22 season.
“I think this will absolutely be the peak moment of this season for 2023,” Haase said. “For 2024, we’re going to start from scratch and see new peaks and new highs. Usually, I tell them to enjoy the win until midnight. This time, I told them they could enjoy this one for the rest of the year.”
Love was 9 of 19 from the floor and 1 of 6 from 3-point range with three rebounds and two steals. Love, who leads Arizona (10–3, 1–1 Pac-12) in scoring (17.4 points per game), has scored at least 20 points in three straight games and five of the last six after doing it only once in the first seven games.
The Wildcats have lost three of their last five games after winning their first eight.
Stanford (6–6, 1–1) was 16 of 25 from 3-point range (64%), becoming the first team to shoot at least 64% outside the arc against a top-four team since West Virginia shot 66.7% against No. 4 Louisville in a 2005 NCAA tournament regional final.
It was the first time Stanford has scored more than 100 points since 2019 and the first time an unranked team has scored at least 100 and won by double digits over a top-five team since Cincinnati’s 101–80 win over No. 4 Louisville in 2003.
Stanford never trailed after scoring the first seven points of the game.
The Cardinal lost all three games at the Battle 4 Atlantis was part of along with UNC, 77–74 in overtime to Arkansas, 83–78 to Michigan and 73–51 to Northern Iowa.
