Wojcik, a 38% 3-point shooter, transferring from Brown to UNC

By R.L. Bynum

Paxton Wojcik, the son of former UNC assistant coach Doug Wojcik, will transfer from Brown to North Carolina.

Paxton Wojcik, who announced his plans on Twitter early Monday evening, will be a graduate transfer after averaging 14.9 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists last season while shooting 46% from the floor and 38% from 3-point range. The news came on the same day that Caleb Love entered the transfer portal.

The 6–5 left-handed shooter committed during an official visit to Chapel Hill on Monday, according to On3.com, and also got interest from Kansas, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Stanford and Butler.

Wojcik collected 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals on Nov. 12, 2021, in the Smith Center when Carolina beat his Brown team 94–87 in a game that the Tar Heels trailed 50–47 at halftime. Wojcik was one of 10 new Brown players that season after the previous season was canceled because of COVID-19.

Wojcik, who was named second-team All-Ivy League this past season as well as to the Academic All-Ivy team, started his career with two seasons at Loyola Chicago.

“I’m looking for a place where I can contribute to winning a conference championship and getting a bid to the NCAA tournament,” Wojcik told stockrisers.com when he entered the transfer portal. “I want to be a part of a winning culture and be around like-minded individuals.”

His career-high is 25 points on March 4 in Brown’s season-ending loss to Yale, one of five career games with at least 20 points. He’s scored at least four 3-pointers eight times in his career, including five in a 17-point game against UMass-Lowell on Nov. 23, 2022. He’s dished out a career-high six assists four times, including three times last season.

Wojcik shot 42.1% from 3-point range as a freshman at Loyola, and 40% in his sophomore season there. After making only 33% of his 3-point shots in his junior season at Brown, he upped that percentage to 38% last season.

Wojcik was an McDonald’s All-American nominee out of La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind., which had an 83–6 record in his high school career.

Doug Wojcik, currently an assistant coach at Michigan State, was an assistant coach at Carolina under Coach Matt Doherty from 2000 to 2003. When current UNC assistant coach Jeff Lebo was the head coach at East Carolina, Wojcik was on his staff for the 2017–18 season.
