Carolina moves up in NET rankings after win at BC; Heels gain Quad 1 win but lose one

By R.L. Bynum

No. 4 North Carolina’s third Quad 2 victory of the season was enough to move the Tar Heels up two spots to 7 in Sunday’s updated NET rankings.

Carolina’s 76–66 Saturday victory at Boston College (11–7, 2–5 ACC) also gave UNC (15–3, 7–0) a two-game lead in the ACC over three teams tied for second place at 5–2: Florida State (11–7), which lost 78–67 to Clemson; N.C. State (13–5), which lost 84–76 to Virginia Tech; and Wake Forest (13–5), which rolled to a 90–65 win over Louisville.

No. 7 Duke (13–4), which dropped five spots to 19 in the NET, fell to fifth place in the ACC after losing at home 80–76 Saturday to Pittsburgh.

When the new AP Top 25 poll comes out Monday, the Tar Heels figure to move up to No. 3 after No. 3 Kansas (15–3) lost Saturday 91–85 at West Virginia.

Carolina, No. 7 in KenPom and No. 9 in Bart Torvik’s rankings, has two Quad 2 games this week against teams tied for second place in the ACC, hosting the Demon Deacons at 7 p.m. Monday (ESPN) and visiting the Seminoles at 2 p.m. Saturday (ESPN).

A NET ranking of 7 projects UNC as a No. 2 seed. Bracket Matrix, which averages dozens of bracket projections, has Carolina as the top No. 2 seed and fourth overall seed. There are 31 bracket projections with the Tar Heels as a No. 1 seed.

The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.

Quadrant 1 (UNC is 2–1; 10 games left): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC is 10; 4 games left): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC is 0–0; 7 games left): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC is 4–0; 2 games left): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower

The Tar Heels still have four Quad 1 victories even though Pittsburgh’s win at Duke restored UNC’s 70–57 Jan. 2 win at Pittsburgh as a Quad 1 victory. That moved the Panthers up 14 spots to 68, easily clearing the 75 threshold to be Quad 1.

The Quad 1 total didn’t change because N.C. State dropped 11 spots to 78 after the Wolfpack’s loss to Virginia Tech (11–7, 3–4). That changed the designation of UNC’s 67–54 win in Raleigh from Quad 1 to Quad 2.

Other designation changes were:

— The 103–67 win on Jan. 13 against Syracuse (13–5, 4–3) moved from a Quad 3 to a Quad 2 because the Orange’s 72–69 victory over Miami moved them up seven spots to 69 (six better than the threshold to be a Quad 2).

—The 91–69 Nov. 22 win in the Bahamas over Northern Iowa (11–8) went back from Quad 2 to Quad 3 after UNI fell to 103 (three below the threshold to be Quad 2), even though the Panthers extended their win streak to four with a 61–57 Saturday win over Southern Illinois.

No. 2 Purdue (17–2) won at Iowa 84–70 Saturday for its seventh Quad 1 victory. No. 1 UConn (17–2) got its sixth Quad 1 win by winning 66–65 Saturday at Villanova. No. 11 Wisconsin and No. 12 Arizona have five Quad 1 wins, and UNC is one of eight teams — along with No. 5 Houston, Kansas, No. 17 Marquette, Villanova, Texas A&M, Boise State and Seton Hall — with four Quad 1 victories.
