What did big win over Duke do for UNC’s NET ranking?

By R.L. Bynum

No. 3 North Carolina’s 93–84 victory Saturday over No. 7 Duke earned the Tar Heels their fifth Quad 1 victory but not a better standing in the NET rankings.

Despite the big win, Villanova’s fifth consecutive loss could be why UNC (18–4, 10–1 ACC) stayed at 9 in the NET.

UNC’s 83–81 overtime loss to Villanova in the Bahamas on Nov. 23 barely moved from Quad 1 to Quad 2 after the Wildcats fell to 51 in the NET, one below the threshold for that to be a neutral-site Quad 1 loss. That means the Tar Heels now have two Quad 2 losses, the other being Tuesday’s 74–73 setback at Georgia Tech (10–12, 3–8).

Nearly all bracket projections on Bracket Matrix, including ESPN and CBS, still have ACC-leading UNC as the fourth No. 1 seed and Houston (19–3) as the third No. 1 seed. The Cougars maintained the top NET ranking despite losing Saturday at Kansas 78–65.

UConn has the most Quad 1 wins with eight, followed by Purdue with seven, and Houston, Arizona, Wisconsin and Baylor with six. UNC has five, along with Kansas, Marquette and Boise State.

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi said the win over Duke “strongly affirmed” UNC’s No. 1 seed status to earn the ACC’s first No. 1 seed in five years, and first- and second-round games in Charlotte.

In bracket projections released before the win over Duke, ESPN and CBS each project Carolina as the No. 1 seed in the West Regional, to be played at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, with the Tar Heels opening play with games in Charlotte.

The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.

Quadrant 1 (UNC is 2–1; 9 games left): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC is 10; 6 games left): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC is 2–0; 4 games left): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC is 5–0; 1 games left): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower

Next up for Carolina is a Quad 2 home game at 7 p.m. Tuesday (ESPN) against Clemson (14–7, 4–6) and a Quad 1 road game at 4 p.m. Saturday (ESPN or ESPN2) at Miami (15–7, 6–5).

The Tar Heels have a two-game lead over Virginia (17–5, 8–3), who moved up two spots to 42, and a 2½-game lead over the Blue Devils (16–5, 7–3), who fell three spots in the NET to 19. Lunardi says that Duke continues trending toward a No. 3 or 4 seed.

N.C. State (15–7, 7–4) moved up three spots to 77 after beating Georgia Tech 82–76 Saturday for its second straight victory. That means that UNC’s win in Raleigh would return to a Quad 1 designation, and the home game against State on March 2 would go from a Quad 3 to a Quad 2 if the Wolfpack could move up two more spots.
