Caleb Love experienced a second wild multi-overtime game in as many seasons, but this time his team prevailed. Meanwhile, Dontrez Styles had a big game for Georgetown, Penn State keeps winning with D’Marco Dunn in the starting lineup, and Destiny Adams continues to produce big-scoring games for Rutgers.
Love produced his first career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds as No. 8 Arizona (18–5, 9–3 Pac-12) outlasted Utah for a 105–99 triple-overtime road victory Thursday night.
After playing 57 minutes and scoring 34 points for Carolina in last season’s 103–101 four-overtime loss to Alabama in Portland, Love played 49 minutes Thursday, going 5 of 20 from the floor and 3 of 11 from 3-point range, but recording two assists, two blocks and a steal.
Love’s drive with 28 seconds left in the first overtime sent the game into a second extra session.
“Maybe I could have called a timeout,” Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd said, according to Wildcat Authority. “I regret that now, but I trust Caleb with the ball in his hands. When they’re in the double bonus, I told Caleb maybe you got to be a little more aggressive there, but playing against that zone is a little funky.
“I probably should have called a timeout and probably put our guys in a little bit better position, but I also know this: Caleb is fully capable of making that shot no matter how well he’s playing because he’s not scared,” Lloyd said.
Love scored Arizona’s first six points of the second overtime on a 3-pointer and three free throws in the first minute.
Love scored a 3-pointer during a decisive 9–0 Wildcats run in the third overtime to take a nine-point lead, and Utah never got closer than six after that.
“The beautiful thing about Caleb is he’s not scared, and he doesn’t have to be perfect,” Lloyd said. “I just kept telling him, play good defense, good play defense. Stay aggressive on offense. It’s going to come. Those are the games you got to hang with it.”
Styles scored 20 points and four 3-pointers with seven rebounds and two assists before fouling out of Georgetown’s 76–70 Wednesday loss at Seton Hall for the Hoyas’ seventh consecutive defeat. It was Styles’ fourth game with at least 20 points this season for Georgetown (8–14, 1–10 Big East).
Dunn started for the third straight game as Penn State extended its win streak to three with an 89–79 home win Thursday over Iowa.
He scored 12 points and two 3-pointers with two rebounds and two steals for his third consecutive double-figure scoring game. He scored five straight points to give Penn State (12–11, 6–6 Big Ten) a 53–49 lead midway through the second half.
Puff Johnson wasn’t in uniform for the game.
Adams scored 22 points and had eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks in Rutgers’ 67–57 Tuesday home loss to Maryland, her sixth game with at least 20 points this season for the Scarlet Knights (7–18, 1–11 Big Ten). Her only such game as a Tar Heel was 23 points on Nov. 16, 2022, against South Carolina State.
Dawson Garcia contributed 10 points, two rebounds, and two assists in Minnesota’s 59–56 Tuesday home win over Michigan State. That was a season-low aside from the Nebraska game, when he got hurt after playing seven scoreless minutes for the Gophers (15–7, 6–5 Big Ten).
Kerwin Walton scored seven points in No. 23 Texas Tech’s 79–73 Tuesday loss at No. 13 Baylor. Walton has started the last 14 games for the Red Raiders (16–6, 5–4 Big 12).
Kennedy Todd-Williams contributed six points, three rebounds and three steals in a 72–53 Thursday home loss for Ole Miss (16–7, 6–4 SEC) to Texas A&M.
Will Shaver played for the first time in four games, logging a block in five minutes of a 76–73 overtime home victory for UAB (15–8, 7–3 American) over No. 20 Florida Atlantic.
