No. 7 North Carolina’s second non-Quad 1 loss of the season dropped the Tar Heels one spot in the NET rankings to 11, probably pushing them further away from the No. 1 seed NCAA tournament seed line.
Both of those losses were on the road, the 74–73 setback on Jan. 30 against Georgia Tech (a Quad 3 loss) and Tuesday’s 86–79 loss to Syracuse (Quad 2). The Orange (16–9, 7–7 ACC) moved up six spots to 85 in the NET.
It’s the lowest the Tar Heels have been in the NET rankings since they were 12th after the win at Pittsburgh on Jan. 2.
Carolina (19–6, 11–3) has two good chances to improve its NCAA resume with two remaining Quad 1 opportunities at No. 21 Virginia (19–6, 10–4; dropping from 32 to 41 in the NET) on Feb. 24 and at No. 9 Duke (19–5, 10–3; up to 16 in the NET) on March 9.
UNC is only projected as a No. 1 seed on only five of 94 projections listed on Bracket Matrix.
The NCAA selection committee is conducting its selection orientation meeting this week in Indianapolis ahead of a bracket preview show that airson CBS at 12:30 Saturday.
In other metrics, UNC fell from 8 to 10 in KenPom, 9 to 13 in ESPN’s BPI, 3 to 4 in KPI and 12 to 14 in Bart Torvik’s T-Rank.
The good news for UNC in the ACC race is that Pittsburgh won 74–63 at Virginia, giving the Tar Heels a one-game lead over the Cavaliers. Duke, after Monday’s 77–69 victory over Wake Forest, is only a half-game back of Carolina.
The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.
NCAA quadrant system
Quadrant 1 (UNC is 6–8): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC is 5–0): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC is 8–0): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC is 5–0): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower
Next up for UNC is a Quad 2 home game at 2 p.m. Saturday (ACC Network) against Virginia Tech (14–10, 6–7), which went up three spots in the NET to 63 after an 83–65 home victory Tuesday over Florida State.
The Miami (15–9, 6–7; NET of 69) home game on Feb. 26 is Quad 2, the N.C. State (15–9, 7–6; NET of 80) home game on March 2 is Quad 3 and the March 5 home game against Notre Dame (8–16, 3–10; NET of 157) is Quad 4.
No quad designations for any game on Carolina’s schedule have changed since the weekend games.
