UNC falls in NET, but will Heels still be a No. 1 seed?

By R.L. Bynum

WASHINGTON — Was No. 4 Carolina’s 84–76 loss to N.C. State in the ACC tournament championship game Saturday night enough to drop the Tar Heels from the No. 1 seed line where they were projected before the game?

The Tar Heels (27–7) will find out tonight when the NCAA tournament field is announced on CBS at 6 p.m. After the loss, they fell one spot to eighth in the NET rankings, while the Wolfpack (22–4) moved up five spots to 63rd.

Joe Lunardi’s updated ESPN projection, published early Sunday morning, still had UNC as the No. 1 seed in the West Regional. Under his projection, Caleb Love’s Arizona team (25–8) would be the No. 2 seed in the West. Patrick Stevens of The Washington Post, also projects that placement for both

Some wondered if No. 7-ranked Iowa State might take the fourth No. 1 seed after the Cyclones rolled to a 69–41 victory over No. 1-ranked Houston.

That’s the scenario under Jerry Palm’s CBS projection, which has Iowa State as the No. 1 seed in the West, with UNC as the No. 2 seed in the East, where he has UConn as the No. 1 seed.

The Cyclones (27–7) moved up two spots to sixth in the NET rankings. But, in Lunardi’s view, Iowa State still will be the No. 2 seed in the East Regional.

Only four of 106 projections on Bracket Matrix have UNC as a No. 2 seed, but many of those projections were before Saturday’s game.

The argument against Iowa State swiping a No. 1 seed is that it was a No. 3 seed and 11th overall on the selection committee’s early bracket reveal a month ago, and that its nonconference schedule is ranked No. 324.

Quadrant 1 (UNC was 9–3): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC was 74): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC was 6–0): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC was 5–0): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower

The loss to the Wolfpack left UNC 7–4 in Quad 2 games with a combined record of 16–7 in Quad 1 and 2 games, which is the same as Iowa State, which is 10–6 in Quad 1 games

Tennessee also dropped one spot in the NET to seventh.

Lunardi has four ACC teams making the field: UNC, No. 11 Duke (No. 4 seed in the East Regional), Clemson (No. 7 in the Midwest) and N.C. State (No. 11 in East), with Virginia in the “last four out” list.

Lunardi has Clemson playing first- and second-round games in Charlotte in Tennessee’s pod. In his other projected Charlotte pod with UNC are Northwestern, Texas A&M and the winner of the First Four game between Howard and Wagner.

Palm has Duke as the No. 4 seed in the Midwest, Clemson the No. 8 seed in the South and N.C. State as the No. 11 seed in the West. He has Virginia and Pittsburgh on his “first 4 out” list.

The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.
