UNC is first to clinch ACC baseball tournament berth but falls in Top 25

By R.L. Bynum

After an easy Saturday victory over N.C. State to salvage a game from the three-game road weekend series, North Carolina became the first team to clinch a spot in the ACC tournament but slipped four spots to No. 15 in the D1 Baseball Top 25 poll released Monday after a 1–3 week.

The Tar Heels (30–10, 15–6 ACC) have a two-game lead over No. 6 Duke (28–11, 13–8; up one spot) in the Coastal Division and have the best league record in the conference. No. 5 Clemson (32–7, 13–5; up one spot) leads the Atlantic Division.

Carolina slipped to No. 7 in the RPI.

Only 12 teams qualify for the ACC tournament, which is set for Charlotte’s Truist Field, the home of the Triple-A Charlotte Knights, May 21–26.

N.C. State (22–15, 12–9) returned to the poll at No. 21 after a pair of wins over the Tar Heels last weekend. Coastal Carolina (27–12), which beat UNC 5–4 on Tuesday, moved up six spots to No. 13 after a 4–0 week.

Other ACC teams ranked are No. 8 Wake Forest (26–13, 11–10; up four spots), No. 10 Florida State (31–8, 11–7; up two spots) and No. 14 Virginia (30–11, 12–9; down four spots).

Other ranked teams Carolina has faced are No. 7 East Carolina (31–8; up two spots) and No. 24 South Carolina (27–13; down four spots).

UNC returns to Boshamer Stadium at 6 p.m. Tuesday (ESPN3) to face Gardner-Webb (15–23) before welcoming Virginia Tech for a weekend series beginning at 6 p.m. Friday (ESPN3). The Bulldogs won two of three games in a weekend series with Longwood. The Hokies (25–12, 12–9), who were No. 23, fell out of the poll after losing two of three over the weekend against Duke. They play host to George Mason at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
