LSU rallies to avoid upset, with ace Holman set to start Saturday

CHAPEL HILL — The NCAA didn’t do No. 6-ranked North Carolina any favors by sending reigning NCAA champion LSU to the Chapel Hill Regional, but Wofford nearly blunted the blow of that bad break.

The upstart No. 3 regional seed Terriers led the No. 2-seed Tigers by two runs for most of Friday afternoon’s Chapel Hill regional opener. But LSU won 4–3 on second baseman Steven Milam’s second homer, a game-ending blast in the ninth inning.

The No. 24-ranked Tigers (41–20) boast two strong starting pitchers in sophomore left-hander Gage Jump (6–2, 3.42 ERA entering the weekend) and junior right-hander Luke Holman (9–3, 2.54 ERA), but saved ace Holman for Saturday.

No. 1 regional and No. 4 overall seed UNC (43–13), 11–8 winner over Long Island (33–24) will send junior right-hander Shea Sprague (3–1, 4.02 ERA) against Holman at 5 p.m. Saturday.

“What a game. I’m really proud of our team,” LSU coach Jay Johnson said. “Wofford is a great team. We knew that coming in. You could easily see, you know, where the 340 batting average came from, the stolen bases, the execution and the pitching. They did a lot of things right today. You know, fortunately for us, we have great players. And, Gage was outstanding today.”

Wofford scored both of its runs off of Jump (top photo) in the second inning. He didn’t walk a batter and stuck out nine, but gave up six hits and three runs in 7⅓ innings.

The Terriers led 2–0 until Milam cut the deficit to one with a solo home run to left-center field in the seventh. After shortstop Jack Renwick restored Wofford’s two-run lead with an eighth-inning blast, LSU tied it with homers from shortstop Michael Braswell II and first baseman Jared Jones in the eighth inning.
