UNC men reportedly will face American in third known nonconference home game

North Carolina’s men’s basketball team will have challenges in November, but the Tar Heels will also have three games that shouldn’t test them much.

With CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein’s report on Wednesday that UNC will face American at home on Nov. 15, the Tar Heels will play three nonconference teams that finished last season with NET rankings of 172 or lower. However, they will play in the Maui Invitational, which features a tough field, and at Kansas on Nov. 8.

Jackie Manuel, a captain on UNC’s 2005 national championship team, has been an assistant coach at American for the last two seasons under head coach Duane Simpkins after he was UNC’s director of team and player development for the two seasons before that.

American finished 16–16 last season, losing to Bucknell in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament, and had a NET ranking of 287. UNC also plays at home on Nov. 4 against Elon, which had a NET of 310 and finished 13–19, and plays at Hawaii on Nov. 22. The Rainbow Warriors had a NET of 172, although they finished 20–14.

The game at Kansas will, of course, be a marquee game at Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks finished No. 20 in the AP poll, No. 19 in the NET, went 23–11, and lost to Gonzaga 89–68 in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The field at the Maui Invitational, which is Nov. 25–27, includes reigning NCAA champion UConn, Memphis and NCAA tournament teams Auburn, Colorado, Dayton, Iowa State and Michigan State.

The other known elements of Carolina’s nonconference schedule are a Dec. 14 home game against La Salle, a Dec. 17 contest in Charlotte with Florida at the Jumpman Invitational and a Dec. 21 matchup with UCLA in the CBS Sports Classic, likely at Madison Square Garden.
