What do the top computer rankings say about the prospects for UNC’s men’s basketball team?
Bart Torvik, whose rankings are one of the three most respected computer rankings, has the Tar Heels moving up from No. 9 in last season’s final ranking to No. 6 in his 2024–25 preseason projection.
Torvik has Houston No. 1, followed by Duke, Iowa State, Kansas and Tennessee, and has two-time reigning national champion UConn No. 12.

The Tar Heels and Blue Devils are the only ACC teams in his top 20, with No. 29 Miami next, followed by No. 32 Wake Forest, No. 46 Clemson, No. 52 Pittsburgh and No. 55 N.C. State. Boston College has the lowest projection at No. 147.
Torvik has UNC finishing 21–8 overall and 14–6 in the ACC.
In the points above replacement metric (PRPG), fifth-year guard RJ Davis, the reigning ACC Player of the Year and All-American first-team selection, has the highest value at 5.8. The next two highest are transfers: junior Cade Tyson (3.7) and Ven-Allen Lubin (3.2). Sophomore guard Elliot Cadeau and junior Jalen Washington are both at 1.4, with senior Jae’Lyn Withers at 1.3 and junior Seth Trimble at 1.2.
