North Carolina’s two football coordinators have the top two base salaries of any employee on the UNC campus, according to the UNC Salary Information Database.

The database, updated on June 30, shows that Carolina’s defensive coordinator Geoff Collins (top photo) and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey are the only employees on the Chapel Hill campus earning a base salary of more than $1 million.

Collins, the former Georgia Tech head coach who joined the Tar Heels’ staff in January, has a base salary of $1,100,000, according to the database, which lists Lindsey, who enters his second season on the staff, as making $1,058,252.

UNC head coach Mack Brown, as with all Carolina coaches, also has revenue from other sources, including Nike, but his base salary is listed as the third-highest on the campus at $900,000, with Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham earning a base salary of $877,124.

Professors in various surgery departments have 12 of the next 15 highest salaries, with the other three belonging to Charlton Warren (the assistant head coach for defense/defensive backs; $834,210), Interim Chancellor Lee Roberts ($684,053) and Randy Clements (offensive line coach; $654,369).

Of the UNC employees with “coach” in their titles, the top 12 base salaries are from the football program, with four of the next five top base salaries going to men’s basketball coaches: assistant coach Jeff Lebo ($404,996), head coach Hubert Davis ($400,000), assistant coach Pat Sullivan ($369,071), assistant coach Brad Frederick ($330,404) and assistant coach Sean May ($312,290).

Women’s basketball coach Courtney Banghart has the third-highest base salary among head coaches at $350,000, followed by track and cross country coach Chris Miltenberg ($275,000), baseball coach Scott Forbes ($270,000) and women’s soccer coach Anson Dorrance ($225,000).

Men’s lacrosse coach Joe Breschi and women’s lacrosse coach Jenny Levy both make base salaries of $220,000, with women’s tennis coach Brian Kalbas, men’s tennis coach Sam Paul and men’s soccer coach Carlos Somoano all at $205,000. At $200,000 are swimming and diving coach Mark Gangloff and wrestling coach Robert Koll.

Other base salaries for head coaches include $190,000 for men’s golf coach Andrew Dibitetto, $175,000 for gymnastics coach Danna Durante, $150,000 for volleyball coach Mike Schall, $145,000 for women’s golf coach Aimee Neff and rowing coach Erin Neppel, $135,000 for softball coach Megan Smith Lyon and $120,000 for fencing coach Matt Jednak.

Field hockey head coach Erin Matson no doubt earned bonuses when she guided the Tar Heels to the 2023 national championship last season, but her base salary is only $105,000.
