‘A dream come true’ for UNC’s Crawley, who makes first U.S. Open main draw

NEW YORK — The ball flew long from her opponent, and North Carolina senior Fiona Crawley grasped her mouth and covered it, which is not something the loquacious, energetic Crawley does much at all. The bundle of 24–7 energy and enthusiasm walked over to her towel at the back of Court 6 here at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, fist-bumped a man in a Carolina cap, and slowly walked to the net, still seeming unsure if she could believe what she had just done.

Carolina’s field hockey and women’s tennis teams were two of the national championship teams honored at the White House on Monday. Vice President Kamala Harris welcomed 19 championship teams at a ceremony outside of the White House as the attendees battled a drizzle. Speaking before Harris was NCAA president Charlie Baker. Logan Eggleston of the Texas women’s volleyball team spoke after Harris.

No. 1 UNC tops No. 3 Pack for Heels’ first women’s tennis team national title, Carolina’s 49th team title

At last, Carolina has broken through to serve the program’s first women’s tennis national championship.
The No. 1-ranked Tar Heels avenged their only loss on Saturday with a 4–1 victory over No. 3 N.C. State at the USTA national campus in Orlando, Fla., in their sixth Final Four appearance. Singles wins by senior Elizabeth Scotty and sophomore Carson Tanguilig within a minute of each other clinched the title.

How to watch UNC-N.C. State national championship women’s tennis match

No. 1 North Carolina and No. 3 N.C. State clash in women’s tennis for a third time this season on Saturday in Orlando, Fla., with the national championship on the line. The match at the USTA Tennis Campus is set for 5:30 p.m. and will air on the Tennis Channel. It’s the first time since 2014 that UNC has made the NCAA championship game. Carolina has won the last four ITA indoor titles and gets a chance to finally break through in the NCAA tournament.

Wrestler O’Connor, diver Vazquez take top honors at Rammys; Maye pass Top Play

Two individual national champions — wrestler Austin O’Connor and diver Aranza Vazquez — earned Athlete of the Year honors at the Rammy Awards on Monday night at Memorial Hall. The awards program recognizes excellence in Carolina athletics over the previous year. Women’s basketball center Malu Tshitenge of women’s basketball and football defensive lineman Kaimon Rucker were the hosts for the event, which was back at Memorial Hall for the first time since 2019.
