During the first full weekend of NFL exhibition games, some Tar Heels tried to move up the depth chart, and others worked simply to win roster spots, while many who expect to play more significant roles got limited snaps.
Rookie Drake Maye’s preseason debut was an uneventful six-snap appearance for the New England Patriots. Sam Howell led the Seattle Seahawks to victory while Dyami Brown, Ty Chandler and Michael Carter had solid efforts.
Second-year Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs didn’t get on the field after suffering a high ankle sprain in practice Wednesday. He is expected to miss two or three more weeks.
Also out for his team’s exhibition opener was rookie Cedric Gray. Listed as the Titans’ second-string inside linebacker, he’s battling a shoulder injury.
The Las Vegas Raiders waived rookie defensive tackle Tomari Fox with an injured designation last week. If he clears waivers, though, the Raiders are expected to put him on the reserve/injured list.
There was plenty of depth-chart movement for UNC alums, including:
—Joshua Ezeudu moving from third-string Giants left tackle to second string.
—Antoine Green, who had three catches on three targets in a 14–3 Thursday loss at the New York Giants, moving from first-string Lions left wide receiver to second string.
—Marcus McKethan going from third-string Giants right guard to fourth string.
Shifting positions were:
—Cole Holcomb from second-string Steelers left inside linebacker to second-string right inside linebacker.
—Mack Hollins going from second-string Bills right wide receiver to second-string left wide receiver.
—Kyler McMichael moving from fourth-string Steelers left cornerback to fourth-string right cornerback.
—Rookie Myles Murphy shifting from fourth-string Cardinals right defensive end to fourth-string left defensive end.
—Rookie Spencer Rolland going from third-string Vikings right tackle to third-string right guard.
—Chazz Surratt moving from third-string weakside Jets linebacker to third-string middle linebacker.
Maye connected on 2 of 3 passes for 19 yards, including a 13-yard connection, and an 84.0 passer rating. He figures to get more than one series when the Patriots host the Philadelphia Eagles at 7 p.m. Thursday (NFL Network).
Howell, in his first action with the Seattle Seahawks after an up-and-down rookie season in Washington, started and played 57 snaps in a 16–3 road win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Check out highlights here.
The backup quarterback to Geno Smith, who didn’t play, Howell connected on 16 of 26 passes for 130 yards and one touchdown, including a 26-yard completion and had an 89.9 passer rating. He was sacked only twice after leading the league in sacks last season and ran for 17 yards (including this 14-yard run).
“It was good to get back out there,” Howell said. “Offensively, we did some good things, but I thought we could have scored more points.”
Brown, Howell’s former passing target with the Commanders, played 19 snaps. He only had two catches on three targets, but one was a spectacular grab for 42 yards in Washington’s 20–17 Saturday road loss to the New York Jets. He is listed as the second second-string left wide receiver behind Terry McLaurin.
Chandler, a second-year Vikings running back standing second on the depth chart, made the most of his 15 snaps in their 24–23 home win over Las Vegas with seven carries for 33 yards, including a 16-yard run.
Carter, in his first Cardinals training camp, played 20 snaps in Arizona’s 16–14 home win over New Orleans. He got seven carries for 41 yards, including an 11-yard gain, and one touchdown.
Mitch Trubisky, in his return to the Buffalo Bills, played 30 snaps in a 33–6 home loss to Chicago. The backup quarterback to Josh Allen, he completed 10 of 18 passes for 82 yards, including a 19-yard gainer, with no touchdowns, no interceptions and a 67.4 passer rating.
Tez Walker had a quiet NFL exhibition debut in 19 snaps during Baltimore’s 16–13 home loss to Philadelphia. Listed as the Ravens’ second-string wide receiver, he had no catches on only one target.

As expected, Broncos starting running back Javonte Williams didn’t play much in their 34–30 win at Indianapolis. In nine snaps, he had four carries for 15 yards (including a seven-yard run) and had one catch for five yards.
Rookie British Brooks is likely in a tough fight to earn a roster spot in Houston, listed as a sixth-string running back. He only played four offensive snaps and 10 special-teams snaps in the Texans’ 20–12 win at Pittsburgh, getting two carries for three yards.
Another rookie, linebacker Amari Gainer, is listed as the Raiders’ fourth-string weakside linebacker. He got 19 defensive snaps and 16 special-teams snaps in Las Vegas’ 24–23 loss at Minnesota, recording two tackles and one special-teams tackle.
Tar Heels who didn’t play last weekend but weren’t listed as injured were Falcons first-string left cornerback Mike Hughes, Holcomb and Hollins.
