British Brooks makes case with Texans, runs for two touchdowns

By R.L. Bynum

Entering the day as the Houston Texans’ sixth-string rookie running back, British Brooks had to make the most of his opportunities to impress the coaches with final cuts scheduled for Aug. 27.

Even though he got only five carries, he did just that.

Brooks, who signed as an undrafted free agent, scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns in Houston’s 28–10 home exhibition victory Saturday over the New York Giants.

His first score came with 12:17 left in the game. He ran off left tackle for six yards, powering by defenders, carrying one as he ran into the end zone for a six-yard scoring run.

Two possessions later, with 3:50 remaining, Brooks ran off left end for 15 yards, slipping into the left side of the end zone just to the right of the pylon, finishing with 23 yards and a 4.6 yards-per-play average.

Eight-year veteran Joe Mixon is the likely running back starter for Houston, with Dameon Pierce, Dare Ogunbowale, Jawhar Jordan and Cam Akers all listed ahead of Brooks on the depth chart.

Houston offensive lineman Charlie Heck missed his second consecutive exhibition because of plantar fasciitis, and Texans defensive back M.J. Stewart didn’t play after getting 28 snaps in Houston’s first exhibition.

For the Giants, offensive linemen Joshua Ezeudu and Marcus McKethan both played off the bench, as did linebacker Tomon Fox, who had no statistics.
