Two former Carolina players will rotate duties on Tar Heel Sports Network football broadcasts this season after longtime color analyst Brian Simmons joined UNC’s football staff as senior advisor to the head coach in the offseason.
Former Carolina wide receiver Joe Jauch (top photo) and former UNC quarterback Brynn Renner will work alongside longtime Voice of the Tar Heels Jones Angell. Each analyst will work about half of the games. Longtime sideline reporter Lee Pace is back, but Renner will fill in for him for one game this season.
Angell announced the changes on Friday’s edition of the “Carolina Insider” podcast.
For the early pregame show this season and late postgame shows, former UNC wide receiver Na Brown will replace Deems May, who had been on that show for years but decided to step away. Former UNC and NFL center Jeff Saturday will again appear on the pregame shows.
Jauch, a branch manager for WestStar Mortgage, who was the analyst for Carolina’s epic 63–61 victory at Appalachian State in 2002 and other games and always brings plenty of energy, will be on the call for Thursday’s opener at Minnesota. The first game for Renner, an account executive with KLDiscovery, will be the Sept. 14 home game against N.C. Central.
Jauch, an assistant football coach at Liberty University for three seasons ending in 1999, lives in the Lynchburg, Va., area. He also does TV work with Liberty.
Jauch was a wide receiver for UNC from 1989 to 1991, catching 36 passes for 532 yards and four touchdowns. He played five seasons in the CFL for three teams, with his best season in 1993 for Hamiton when he caught 31 passes for 512 yards as a slotback.
Renner played four seasons for UNC from 2010 to 2023, completing 668 of 1,005 passes for 8,221 yards and 64 touchdowns and running for four touchdowns.
Renner, who was with five NFL teams but never played in a regular-season game, was on Butch Davis’ staff at Florida International staff from 2017 to 2021, including as quarterbacks coach and cornerbacks coach.
Brown, a productions manager at Johnson Controls, played four seasons at Carolina, catching 165 passes for 2,086 yards and 14 touchdowns. He played parts of three seasons from 1999 to 2001 with the Philadelphia Eagles, catching 34 passes for 363 yards and two touchdowns, and also in two indoor football leagues.
