UNC’s Thanksgiving week matchup in 2025 with Michigan State official

By R.L. Bynum

North Carolina’s game with Michigan State during Thanksgiving week 2025, which was reported in early October, became official on Thursday.

The Spartans and Tar Heels game is the feature matchup of the Fort Myers Tip-Off Beach Division. The remaining two teams, as well as game dates and matchups, will be announced in the coming weeks

Michigan, Xavier, Virginia Tech and South Carolina play in the 2024 event Nov. 25–27 at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena, concluding the day before Thanksgiving.

Illinois will face Arkansas in Kansas City this Thanksgiving Day in a game to air on CBS.

Gonzaga, Kansas, Auburn, Florida, Ohio State, Marquette, Wisconsin and Virginia, among others, have recently participated in the event.

Carolina leads the series with Michigan State 6–3, including the Tar Heels’ 85–69 victory on March 23 last season in Charlotte in the second round of the NCAA tournament (top photo). UNC beat the Spartans 89–72 on April 6, 2009, in Detroit to win the national championship.

This Thanksgiving week, UNC plays three games on Nov. 25–27 at the Maui Invitational, but Coach Hubert Davis has said that he doesn’t like in-season tournaments in which the Tar Heels play on three consecutive days.
