A miraculous Drake Maye throw sent New England’s game into overtime but his deep pass got intercepted to end the game.
One week after leaving the Patriots’ game with a concussion, Maye — who cleared concussion protocol Saturday — had some spectacular moments and was responsible for 301 of their 316 yards in their 20–17 overtime loss at Tennessee.
“I made some bad decisions, especially that one at the end there,” Maye said. “We’ve got a chance to go down there and at least tie it up. So, just got to be better.”
The best play of his short NFL career came at the end of regulation.
Maye scrambled to avoid pressure from a few Titans defenders before he threw the ball at the last possible second as a defender brought him down, finding running back Rhamondre Stevenson in the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown pass to tie the game. As Maye got the pass off, play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti said, “He’s ready to throw; nobody’s open!”
See different angles of the play here, here and here.
The 11.82 seconds it took Maye to make the throw was the second-longest of any touchdown pass since the NFL started tracking that with NextGenStats in 2016. The only scoring pass that took longer was Jayden Daniels’ 12.7 seconds on his game-winning Hail Mary pass in Week 8.
After Tennessee (2–6) consumed all but 2:34 of overtime to produce a Nick Folk field goal, Maye had a chance to rally New England (2–7).
One play after scrambling 11 yards down the right sideline for a first down, Amani Hooker intercepted his deep pass intended for Kayshon Boutee — his second interception — to end the game.
Maye called it a “dumb decision.”
“[There are] some decisions that I made throughout the game that would have impacted the outcome,” Maye said. “I take that upon myself. Those guys battled up front. The receivers are battling. We’ll go back and learn from it, especially me. I’ve got to take advantage of these reps that I’m getting and play better.”
Maye ran for a career-high and team-high 95 yards, including a career-high 26-yard run, on eight carries. He completed 29 of 41 passes for 206 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and a 69.8 passer rating. He was sacked four times for 21 yards.
“The guy’s special, man,” Patriots tight end Hunter Henry said. “Just the way he competes, the way he plays, the way he continues to fight. I’m excited to continue to go out there and play with him. He’s very special; got a lot of talent.”
Maye became the first player in Patriots franchise history with more than 200 passing yards and more than 90 rushing yards in a game since 1964.
