Fifth-year guard Kerwin Walton scored a game-high 21 points and a career-high seven 3-pointers as host Texas Tech rolled to a 94–61 opening-game victory Tuesday over Bethune-Cookman as the program began its 100th season.
Walton started and made 7 of 12 3-point attempts to better his previous best of six 3-pointers, which he scored on Dec. 6, 2023, against Omaha and on Jan. 17, 2024, at Houston, both for Texas Tech. His best perimeter shooting game for UNC was five 3s on Feb. 20, 2021, at home against Louisville.
Walton, who tied for the best +/- at +36, scored 12 points and four 3-pointers in the second half.

It was Walton’s second career game with at least 20 points, the first when he collected a career-high 22 points in that 2023 Omaha game. His top-scoring game at Carolina was 18 in a home win over Duke on March 6, 2021.
Walton had a 3-pointer during the Red Raiders’ 17–0 run to end the first half and take a 50–28 halftime lead.
