Tar Heels in NFL: Maye efficient in another breakout performance, but in a loss

By R.L. Bynum

Rookie New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye produced another breakout performance on Sunday. But Maye wasn’t focused on his excellent numbers after their fourth loss in five games but on the team’s red-zone failures.

Maye completed 24 of 30 passes for 238 yards and ran for 49 yards in New England’s 25–24 home loss to the Indianapolis Colts that eliminated the Patriots (3–10) from playoff contention.

Maye was able to engineer only two touchdowns on six red-zone trips.

“I have to give our guys some chances,” Maye said. “Just can’t settle for four field goals in the red zone and expect to win ballgames.”

Despite that negative, Maye was one of the most efficient quarterbacks in Week 13, surpassed only by Washington rookie Jaden Daniels and Pittsburgh’s Russell Wilson. He had his second-highest expected points added output of the season at +9.4, picking apart the Colts’ zone-coverage schemes with a 6.3 air yards average per attempt.

He showed off his running skills with a season-high 41-yard run in the first quarter.

Maye gave New England a 16–14 lead with a 16-yard touchdown pass late in the first half to tight end Austin Cooper.

Maye had several impressive completions, including this one on third down in the third quarter to Hunter Henry and this one over the middle in the fourth quarter to Kendrick Bourne.

After Indianapolis retook the lead, an 11-yard touchdown run from New England’s Antonio Gibson was followed by Maye connecting with Kayshon Boutte for the two-point conversion to put the Patriots ahead 24–17.

Indianapolis, playing without wide receiver Josh Downs (shoulder injury), won the game on Alec Pierce’s 3-yard touchdown reception with 12 seconds left and quarterback Anthony Richardson’s two-point conversion run.

In Washington’s 42–19 home win over Tennessee, wide receiver Dyami Brown had four catches for 35 yards and one carry for four yards. For the Titans, Cedric Gray had one tackle in kickoff coverage.

Running back Ty Chandler had two carries for two yards for Minnesota in the Vikings’ 23–22 home win over Arizona.

Linebacker Chazz Surratt had a tackle and an assist for the New York Jets in their 26–21 home loss to Seattle. Quarterback Sam Howell didn’t play for the Seahawks.

Safety M.J. Stewart played off the bench for Houston in its 23–20 win at Jacksonville with no statistics.

Cornerback Mike Hughes was inactive for Atlanta’s game with a neck injury.
