It’s probably too early in the season to be worried about the NET rankings, but the first listings of the season came out Monday, and it’s worth noting where North Carolina falls.
The men’s team (4–3) comes in at No. 26, with the Dayton victory the lone Quad 1 victory, three Quad 1 losses and the Tar Heels 2–0 in Quad 3 games and 1–0 in Quad 4 games.
The women’s team (7–1) is No. 21, but the women’s list doesn’t break down games by quadrants.
The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.
NCAA quadrant system
Quadrant 1 (UNC is 4–3; 5 games left): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC is 1–1; 3 games left): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC is 6–0; 2 games left): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC is 6–0; no games left): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower
The NET rankings don’t make the ACC men look good, with four of the five lowest-ranking power conference teams from the league: No. 175 Georgia Tech (4–3), No. 177 Syracuse (4–2), No. 191 Miami (3–4) and No. 233 Virginia Tech (3–4).
That shows the importance of playing well at 7:15 Wednesday (ESPN) at home in UNC’s ACC/SEC Men’s Challenge game against Alabama (6–2), which is No. 13 in the NET ranking to make it a Quad 1 game. UNC opens ACC play at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Center against the Yellow Jackets (ACC Network).
UNC has two more Quad 1 games in December: the Dec. 17 Jumpman Invitational in Charlotte against No. 6 Florida and the Dec. 21 CBS Sports Classic in New York against No. 16 UCLA.
Carolina has only two Quad 1 games in January: the New Year’s Day game at No. 30 Louisville and the Jan. 28 game at No. 5 Pittsburgh. That game against the Panthers is the first of four consecutive Quad 1 games, finishing with games at No. 4 Duke on Feb. 1, at home against Pitt on Feb. 8 and at No. 18 Clemson on Feb. 10.
UNC has only two Quad 1 games after that: at No. 67 Florida State on Feb. 24 and at home on March 8 vs. Duke.
The Big Ten and the SEC have the most top-50 teams at 11, followed by the Big 12 with nine and the ACC with five.
Other ACC women’s teams ranked high in the NET are No. 9 Duke (8–1), No. 13 Notre Dame (5–2), No. 24 Georgia Tech (7–0), No. 25 Cal (7–1), No. 27 Florida State (8–1) and No. 30 N.C. State (4–3).
The Big Ten has the most top 50 teams on the women’s list, followed by the SEC with 11 and the ACC with nine.
