North Carolina dropped 16 spots in the NET rankings to 42, and Monday fell out of the AP Top 25 men’s basketball poll after splitting two games last week.
The Tar Heels (5–4, 1–0 ACC) have many issues to work out on the court, but they have two chances this month to bolster their early NCAA resume with two Quad 1 games after narrowly escaping a damaging Quad 4 loss with a 68–65 home victory Saturday over Georgia Tech (4–5; 0–1; 171 NET ranking).
UNC, which garnered the 42nd-most poll points, is out of the AP poll for the first time since the last poll of the 2022–23 season.
After Saturday’s 4 p.m. home game (The CW) against La Salle (6–4; 150 NET ranking), which is a Quad 3 game, UNC has back-to-back Quad 1 games at neutral sites. The Tar Heels face No. 9 Florida (9–0; 7 NET ranking) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, in Charlotte (ESPN) at the Jumpman Invitational and No. 24 UCLA (8–1; 14 NET ranking) at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at the CBS Sports Classic in Madison Square Garden (CBS).
The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.
NCAA quadrant system
Quadrant 1 (UNC is 4–4; 5 games left): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC is 1–0; 3 games left): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC is 6–0; 2 games left): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC is 6–0; no games left): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower
UNC has the fifth-best NET ranking in the ACC behind four teams that all won their league openers over the weekend: No. 4 Duke (4th; 7–2), No. 16 Clemson (11th; 9–1), Pittsburgh (16th, 8–2) and SMU (40th; 8–2).
Carolina still gets decent resume-building chances in January, starting with a Quad 1 game at Louisville (62nd; 5–4, 0–1) at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Day (ACCN) before three consecutive Quad 2 games: At Notre Dame (96th; 5–5, 1–0), vs. SMU (40; 1–0, 8–2) and at N.C. State (92; 6–3, 1–0).
The other Quad 1 opportunities in league play will be the two Duke games (at Durham on Feb. 1 and in Chapel Hill on March 8), the two Pittsburgh games (at Pittsburgh on Jan. 28 and in Chapel Hill on Feb. 8) and the Feb 10 game at Clemson.
There was good news for UNC last week: the Dayton win at the Maui Invitational became a Quad 1 win after the Flyers (37th; 8–2) won twice last week.
