Open seating, free admission for snow game against N.C. State

CHAPEL HILL — Much like North Carolina’s 75–63 victory over Maryland in 2000, Wednesday night at the Smith Center should be a student-dominated affair.

When 20.3 inches of snow fell in the Triangle in 2000, there was open seating, and the Carolina students got most of the prime seats around the court. The snow totals aren’t nearly as high, but the same dynamic is expected for Wednesday night’s N.C. State game on a day when classes were canceled.

Because of the snowy road conditions, school officials have advised fans not to drive to the game and will allow anybody within walking distance to get into the arena for the game. No ticket will be required and there will be open seating.

“We certainly want our fans here to cheer on our team — but more importantly, we want everyone to be safe,’’ Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham said. “To those on and around campus who can join us, please walk in; we know you will provide a great atmosphere. To those who can’t make it, we know you will be supporting our team from home.”

The doors opened at 5:30, with the game set to start at 7 p.m.

The N.C. State team has been in Chapel Hill most of the day. The Wolfpack had a shootaround at the Smith Center early in the day and arrived at the arena for the game a little after 5:30 p.m.
