Good news on injury to UNC star Ustby

By R.L. Bynum

Veteran star Alyssa Ustby missed most of No. 9 UNC’s victory Sunday against N.C. State with a left knee injury and didn’t travel with the team for Thursday’s 68–58 victory at Syracuse, but there was good news.

During an interview on the Tar Heel Sports Network pregame show before the Syracuse game, UNC coach Courtney Banghart said it isn’t a long-term injury.

“She’ll be back soon,” Banghart said. “I know she was in that tunnel, running and mad at me and all those things. But she and I are close enough that she understands it’s for the betterment of her that we’re going to make sure that she’s all right. So, she’ll be back. She’ll go strong for that, for that rebounding record, and for her, I hope she gets it.”

Banghart’s comments suggest that it isn’t an ACL injury and that Ustby may only miss a few games, as she is considered “week to week.”

Redshirt freshman Ciera Toomey started instead of Ustby for her first college start.

Ustby played only 2½ minutes on Sunday before asking out of the lineup. After briefly sitting on the bench, she went to the dressing room and never came back out on the court.

Ustby, a fifth-year graduate student, is averaging 10.7 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
