North Carolina center Jalen Washington will transfer to Vanderbilt for his final college season, according to On3.com.
He’ll reunite with former UNC teammate Tyler Nickel, who will be a rising senior next season after coming to the Commodores last offseason from Virginia Tech.
Vanderbilt went 20–13 last season (8–10 in the SEC) and lost 59–56 to Saint Mary’s in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Vanderbilt returns 6–7 rising senior forward Devin McGlockton, who averaged 10.3 points and led the Commodores in rebounding with 7.9 per game.
Washington began last season as a UNC and put up career-highs averages in points (5.7), rebounds (4.2) and blocks (0.8) and started 16 games, but came off the bench in favor of Ven-Allen Lubin for the last month of the season.
There were rumors last offseason that Washington, who has one year of remaining eligibility, might leave the program, but he decided to return.
Probably his best moments of the season were when he gave Carolina the late lead at N.C. State with a dunk and blocked the potential game-winning shot by the Wolfpack at the other end.
With the Tar Heels likely to go after a top center in the portal and Lubin likely returning, Washington faced an even more diminished role at UNC next season.
Washington only scored in double figures in five games last season, topped by 18-point performances on Nov. 15 against American and Jan. 25 against Boston College.
He arrived at Carolina with pro potential but injuries have hampered him throughout his career, and he missed the game last season at Pittsburgh with a left knee injury. He was still recovering from a right knee injury suffered in high school when his UNC career started.
He was healthy for most of last season but never took the next step that many expected from him.
