Ven-Allen Lubin intends to return to North Carolina but has entered the transfer portal one day before it closes on Tuesday.
He made the announcement in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.
“Before anybody jumps to the wrong conclusion, I am letting everyone know that I am entering the transfer portal with full intent on returning to UNC,” he said in the post. “My action relates to the complexities surrounding the possible approval of the pending NCAA settlement.”
If he ultimately decides to transfer, it would be his fourth college in four seasons.
Lubin emerged as a starter for UNC over the last month of the season, but former Arizona center Henri Veesaar is the clear starter next season.
The playing time for Lubin, who played his freshman season at Notre Dame, his sophomore season at Vanderbilt and his junior season at Carolina, could also be affected by newcomers such as five-star 6–9 freshman Caleb Wilson and 6–11 Alabama transfer Jarin Stevenson.
Lubin did well considering he’s only 6–8 and routinely had to battle taller centers. His best game was a 20-point, 10-rebound performance in the 74–71 ACC tournament loss to Duke on March 14, one of four double-doubles on the season.
