His Airness will be on the air next season.
NBC announced Monday morning that Michael Jordan will be a special contributor to its coverage of the NBA as the network’s contract begins next season.
In posting about the news on social media, NBC wrote: “A legendary addition to our team! “We’re thrilled to welcome Michael Jordan as a special contributor to the NBA on NBC and Peacock.”
Since retiring in 2003, Jordan, the Hall of Fame six-time NBA champion with the Chicago Bulls and 1982 national champion at Carolina, hasn’t regularly appeared on NBA television coverage.
“Hey everyone, sorry I can’t be with you all today,” Jordan said in a pre-recorded message played at the NBC press event, according to Awful Announcing. “I am so excited to see the NBA back on NBC. The NBA on NBC was a meaningful part of my career, and I’m excited about being a special contributor to the project.”
NBC, which aired NBA games from 1990 to 2002, begins an 11-year agreement with the NBA next season.
His role is unclear, but a special contributor suggests that his role will be limited.
NBC previously had announced that former players Reggie Miller and Jamal Crawford as game analysts and Carmelo Anthony as a studio analyst next season. The play-by-play announcers will be Mike Tirico and Noah Eagle.
