Oklahoma saving ace for potential Saturday matchup with No. 1 UNC

By R.L. Bynum

Do you hold your ace for Saturday against a potentially better opponent in a regional, or pitch him in a Friday game in which you are favored?

North Carolina coach Scott Forbes said Monday that he’s leaning toward starting ace right-hander and ACC Pitcher of the Year Jake Knapp (12–0, 2.17 ERA) in the No. 1-ranked and No. 1 regional seed Tar Heels’ noon Friday opener against No. 4 regional seed Holy Cross in the Chapel Hill Regional.

“That’s my initial gut,” UNC coach Scott Forbes said Monday, touting how sophomore right-hander Jason DeCaro (8–3, 3.42 ERA) has also been very effective. “They’re both two of the best pitchers in the country. I’m confident with them pitching against anybody. So  we will probably keep them on that rest that they just had.”

No. 2 regional seed Oklahoma has made a different decision.

Two junior right-handed pitchers, twin brothers Kyson Witherspoon (top photo) and Malachi Witherspoon, have had very different seasons. Kyson is the ace, but Malachi (3–8, 5.53 ERA) will start the Sooners’ 5 p.m. Friday opener against No. 3-seed Nebraska.

The apparent plan is for Kyson Witherspoon (10–3, 2.47 ERA) to pitch Saturday when the Sooners face UNC or Holy Cross in either a losers’ bracket game at noon or a winners’ bracket game at 6 p.m.

Last Wednesday, Kyson Witherspoon gave up five hits and two runs in 7⅔ innings with eight strikeouts and no walks in the Sooners’ 3–2 victory over No. 10-ranked Georgia in Hoover, Ala., at the SEC tournament.

Malachi Witherspoon hasn’t pitched since giving up four hits and four runs (three earned) with three walks and 10 strikeouts on May 17 in a 9–1 home loss to No. 4-ranked Texas.
