Both played well in their first meeting since being teammates at Carolina, but Armando Bacot’s double-double led his Memphis Grizzlies to a 96–86 NBA Summer League victory Saturday night in Las Vegas over Caleb Love’s Portland Trail Blazers.
Bacot matched his five-game Summer League high this year of 14 points, while pulling down 12 rebounds and blocking four shots, both league-highs for him.
One of those blocks was swatting away Love’s driving layup attempt, drawing a wry smile from Bacot.
For the second time in as many games in Las Vegas, Love scored 18 points, this time on 7 of 21 shooting while making 3 of 9 3-point attempts.
Love gave Portland a 65–62 lead with 9:27 left on a pull-up 3-pointer. But those were his final points, and Bacot’s two free throws with 8:47 left started an 8–3 Memphis run to give the Grizzlies the lead for good.
Justin McKoy played just under 5½ minutes off the bench for the Trail Blazers, scoring two points off a pair of free throws.
RJ Davis played nearly 17½ minutes, the most playing time for him in five Summer League games, in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 94–81 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, although he again came off the bench.
Davis put up Summer League highs of nine points (on 3 of 8 shooting; 1 of 5 from 3-point range) and five assists while pulling down two rebounds and getting a steal.
In the Milwaukee Bucks’ 93–83 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Pete Nance scored in double figures for the second straight game, collecting 12 points, four rebounds and three blocks. After scoring 18 points in the Bucks’ opener, Cormac Ryan was 1 of 7 from the floor and only scored six points.
Harrison Ingram started for the fifth consecutive game for the San Antonio Spurs, which is one of five teams 2–0 in Las Vegas. He played more than 22 minutes, the most during this Summer League, in their 76–69 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Ingram scored four points while pulling down six rebounds, dishing out four assists and getting a steal.
Former Duke star Cooper Flagg rebounded from scoring only 10 points in his Summer League debut to pour in 31 points against the Spurs.
Former Tar Heels playing on Sunday are:
— Dawson Garcia, Garrison Brooks, and the Detroit Pistons, who face the Houston Rockets at 4 p.m. on ESPN2.
