Black shows versatility in stat-stuffing double-double; Ryan, Nance play well

By R.L. Bynum

Leaky Black reminded Carolina fans of the do-it-all game they saw many nights, delivering a standout double-double performance in the NBA Summer League on Wednesday — his most complete showing yet in Las Vegas.

Starting for the second straight game, Black tallied 10 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, four blocks and two steals in the Washington Wizards’ 86–76 loss to the Utah Jazz. All five marks were personal highs for Black this summer.

Tar Heels fans recognize the classic Black performance, characterized by tough defense, smart passing and relentless effort.

During his five seasons at UNC, Black’s only double-double was when he had 13 points and 10 rebounds on Feb. 4, 2023, in a 63–57 loss at Duke. His career rebound high was 12 in an 80–64 home win over James Madison on Nov. 20, 2022. He blocked four shots once: in a 71–63 home win over Virginia on Feb. 25, 2023.

Black played last season for the Wizards’ G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go, and hasn’t played in a regular-season NBA game since the 2023–24 season with the Charlotte Hornets.

Pete Nance and Cormac Ryan each scored in double figures in the Milwaukee Bucks’ 102–96 loss to the Chicago Bulls.

Nance collected 14 points, three 3-pointers, three assists, two steals and two blocks, his fourth double-figure scoring performance in as many games. Ryan had 15 points, five rebounds and seven fouls (players get 10 in the Summer League) in 23½ minutes.

Kerwin Walton had two points and an assist in less than four minutes playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder in a 95–81 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.

Former UNC players playing Thursday are:
— Garrison Brooks and Dawson Garcia, whose Detroit Pistons meet the Miami Heat at 4 p.m. on NBATV.
— Armando Bacot, whose Memphis Grizzlies play the Atlanta Hawks at 6 p.m. on NBATV.
— Harrison Ingram, whose San Antonio Spurs meet Charlotte at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
— Caleb Love and Justin McKoy, whose Portland Trail Blazers take on the Houston Rockets at 8 p.m. on NBATV.
