Coach Courtney Banghart’s seventh team at North Carolina will get a huge preseason test.
The Tar Heels’ women’s basketball team takes on powerhouse South Carolina in an exhibition at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena on Thursday, Oct. 30, as part of a doubleheader.
The game will start at 6 p.m., and will be followed by a men’s game between Auburn and Memphis but TV for the doubleheader hasn’t been announced. Tickets go on sale Friday, Aug. 8, at 10 a.m.
UNC still hasn’t released its nonconference schedule, although UNCW will play at UNC on Dec. 17 (according to the UNCW schedule). Banghart confirmed that the Tar Heels will play UCLA and Fairfield in Las Vegas. It was previously announced that the Tar Heels would play at Texas in the ACC/SEC Challenge and meet Kansas State, South Dakota State and Columbia in Cancun.
The Tar Heels and Gamecocks last met in Columbia, S.C., during the second round of the 2024 NCAA tournament, with South Carolina winning 81–41. In regular-season neutral-site matchups, North Carolina holds a narrow 7–6 edge, with the all-time series tied at 11 wins each.
South Carolina comes off a 35–4 season that ended with an 82–58 loss to UConn in the national championship game. The Gamecocks are 5–4 against UNC under Coach Dawn Staley with wins in the last four meetings, including all three meetings since Banghart arrived in Chapel Hill.
It will be a tough early challenge for the Tar Heels, who played the Gamecocks in Columbia in a closed preseason scrimmage a couple of seasons ago.
UNC comes off its best season under Banghart, going 29–8 and making the Sweet 16 for the 19th time in program history.
The Tar Heels return 10 players and bring in four transfers and three freshmen.
