After spending the preseason with Minnesota, the Vikings dealt quarterback Sam Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
It’s the third time he’s been traded since Washington picked him in the fifth round of the 2022 draft, and he started 17 games for the Commanders in 2023. The Commanders traded him to Seattle on March 14, 2024. Howell only played two games last season, completing 5 of 14 passes. The Seahawks dealt Howell to the Vikings on April 16.
The Vikings get a fifth-round 2026 pick, and a seventh-round 2027 pick, while the Eagles get Howell and a sixth-round 2026 pick.
The Eagles made the deal after quarterback Tanner McKnee injured a finger on his throwing hand and didn’t play in Philadelphia’s final preseason game. Other quarterbacks on the Eagles’ roster are starter Jalen Hurts and Kyle McCord. The Eagles waived Dorian Thompson-Robinson on Sunday.
The Vikings made the move after reaching a deal with veteran quarterback Carson Wentz, according to ESPN.
Howell didn’t play in the Vikings’ final exhibition game after completing 12 of 18 passes for 128 yards in two preseason games.
While playing for division rival Washington, Howell combined to throw five touchdown passes and connect on 68 of 93 passes for 687 yards against Philadelphia in two Eagles wins, 34–31 in overtime on Oct. 1, 2023, and 38–31 on Oct. 29, 2023.
