Carolina will play its first ACC men’s basketball games in California and Texas as part of its league schedule, which was announced on Tuesday.
Conference play in Coach Hubert Davis’ fifth season will be open on Dec. 30 or 31 against at home against Florida State and finish at Duke on March 7. In Seth Trimble’s senior day game on March 3 or 4, UNC will take on Clemson.
The Tar Heels will visit Stanford and California in the same week, playing in Palo Alto, Calif., against the Cardinal on Jan. 13 or 14, and in Berkeley, Calif., against the Bears on Jan. 17. Duke makes the trip to the Bay Area the same week, playing the first at Cal, then at Stanford.
UNC visits SMU on Jan. 3. Carolina’s women’s team made the California and SMU trips last season.
The only ACC teams that the Tar Heels will play twice in the 18-game schedule are Duke (the game at the Smith Center will be on Feb. 7) and Syracuse (Feb. 2 in Chapel Hill and Feb. 21 in Syracuse). Just as last season, UNC will only play N.C. State once; this season, the game will be in Raleigh on Feb. 17 or 18.
Other ACC teams playing at the Smith Center will Wake Forest on Jan. 10, Notre Dame on Jan. 20 or 21, Pittsburgh on Feb. 14, Louisville on Feb. 23 and Virginia Tech on Feb. 28.
Other road ACC games for the Tar Heels, who will not face Boston College, will be against Virginia on Jan 23, Georgia Tech on Jan. 31 and Miami on Feb. 10 or 11.
After exhibition games on Oct. 24 against BYU in Salt Lake City and Oct. 29 at the Smith Center against Winston-Salem State, the Tar Heels open the season at home on Nov. 3 against Central Florida. They face an early test on Nov. 7 when they host Kansas.
The ACC tournament will be at Charlotte’s Spectrum Center from March 10 to 14.
