UNC’s men’s basketball headed to Cherokee for fan-focused weekend

By R.L. Bynum

The North Carolina men’s basketball team is heading west — not for a game, but for a weekend of connection, celebration and a sneak peek at the season ahead.

In a rare off-campus appearance, the Tar Heels will spend Oct. 17 and 18 in Cherokee, offering fans a chance to meet the team, collect autographs and watch an intrasquad scrimmage. It’s a chance for Carolina fans in the western part of the state to get up close with the players and coaches before the season tips off.

That will come the weekend before Carolina goes to Salt Lake City to face BYU in an exhibition game on Oct. 24.

Coach Hubert Davis’ team was going to have a scrimmage in Cherokee last October, but it was moved to the Smith Center in the aftermath of the damage from Hurricane Helene.

The weekend begins Friday night at Harrah’s Resort, where Old Well Management will host a dinner and meet-and-greet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fans will mingle with the team, share stories, and enjoy a relaxed evening of Carolina basketball camaraderie. Tickets for the event are $100 per person, plus fees, and can be purchased here.

Saturday morning brings more fan access, starting with an autograph session at Cherokee High School at 10:30 a.m. Admission is $25, which can be purchased here, and that ticket comes with entry to the team’s scrimmage at Charles George Memorial Arena on the high school’s campus — a rare chance to see the Tar Heels in action before the season begins. No separate tickets will be sold for the scrimmage.

For fans in Cherokee and beyond, it’s more than just a weekend — it’s a celebration of Carolina basketball and the community that supports it.

Roster assuming all players with eligibility other than Caleb Wilson, Henri Veesaar and the seven players who entered the transfer portal return, which would put UNC two under the 15-player limit. The class for next season is listed.
