UNC, Butler agree to home-and-home men’s basketball series

By R.L. Bynum

Nearly a century after their first meeting, two top men’s basketball programs — North Carolina and Butler — have agreed to a home-and-home series.

The series will begin in Chapel Hill, where the Tar Heels will host the Bulldogs in November or December in 2026. A year later, the scene will shift to the storied Hinkle Fieldhouse, where Butler will welcome UNC in November or December in 2027.

Butler announced the news on Thursday.

Each team has claimed three wins in six previous meetings. Their history dates back to 1929, when Butler defeated the Tar Heels 43–20 at what was then known as Butler Fieldhouse.

North Carolina struck back in 1992 with a 103–96 win in Indianapolis, then defended its home court in 1994 in a 104–64 victory. But the series took a turn on neutral courts.

Unranked Butler teams shocked the college basketball world with upset victories over top-10 UNC squads at the 2012 Maui Invitational and the 2014 Battle 4 Atlantis. Butler, coached by Brad Stevens, downed the No. 9 Tar Heels 82–71 in Maui, and a Bulldogs team coached by Chris Holtmann downed the No. 5 Tar Heels 74–66 in the Bahamas.

The No. 5 Tar Heels responded in 2017, overpowering the No. 21 Bulldogs 92–80 in the Sweet 16 on their way to a national championship. It was Roy Williams’ only win over Butler in three tries at UNC.

Now, nearly a decade later, the teams will battle again.
