Wes Durham interviews Hubert Davis in hour-long ACC Network special

By R.L. Bynum

Get insights into Coach Hubert Davis’ lifelong connections to Carolina basketball during an interview that airs on ACC Network on Tuesday night.

During the hour-long program that starts at 8 p.m., “Nothing But Net Special Hubert Davis Conversation,” Wes Durham has an in-depth discussion with Davis, who reflects on watching his uncle, Walter Davis, play at UNC and being recruited by Hall of Fame coach Dean Smith.

“From that time at four, I just remember walking into Carmichael and saying, ‘This is where I want to be,’ ” Davis says in a trailer for the special, which was recorded at the Carolina Basketball Museum in front of UNC’s national championship trophies.

Davis also talks about his playing career, experience working at ESPN, returning to UNC to work for Roy Williams, succeeding Williams as the head coach, and more.

“Everything significant in my life has happened here,” Davis said. “I fell in love with my wife here, got married here. Then, after I retired from the NBA in 2004, we decided to raise our three kids here. It’s our home.”

He also talks about his philosophy as a coach.

“The coach that I am today is filtered through my personality and filtered through my experience as a player,” he said. “I challenge our players to be complete basketball players.”

As he’s said many times, he can’t coach a player unless they know each other and emphasized how important that is.

“Without the relationship piece, I’m not doing this job the way that Coach Smith, Coach [Bill] Guthridge and Coach Williams did,” Davis said.

You can watch the entire interview at  8 p.m. Tuesday on ACC Network.
