Powell sprains ankle in return to NBA

By R.L. Bynum

Drake Powell’s bad injury luck continued Sunday.

The Brooklyn Nets rookie, who missed the entire preseason with left knee tendinopathy, has now suffered ankle injuries in both NBA games he’s played in this season, showing flashes of why he was a first-round draft pick in each game.

In the Nets’ season opener in Charlotte, Powell’s NBA debut, he suffered a right ankle sprain after playing seven minutes and scoring two points.

Powell was assigned to G League camp with the franchise’s Long Island Nets affiliate last Monday but was recalled to Brooklyn and played Sunday. After scoring two points in just under 4½ minutes during the first quarter of the Nets’ 129–105 loss to Philadelphia, he got hurt. Powell again sprained his right ankle, this time in a non-contact injury.

Just like in the Charlotte game, Powell scored his only bucket on a coast-to-coast drive, this time after a steal.

In that game, Day’Ron Sharpe had one point and two rebounds Sunday after collecting two points and six rebounds in Wednesday’s 117–112 loss to Atlanta.

Walker Kessler collected 18 points and 12 rebounds in Utah’s 136–134 win on Wednesday. But he was held to four points with 13 rebounds in Friday’s 118–96 loss to Phoenix, and missed Sunday’s 126–103 loss to Charlotte with left shoulder bursitis.

For Milwaukee, Cole Anthony scored 16 points and two 3-pointers with three rebounds and two assists before fouling out Wednesday in the Bucks’ 120–110 win over the Golden State Warriors. Anthony combined for seven points in the Bucks’ other two games in the last week.

Harrison Barnes scored 10 points and two 3-pointers in San Antonio’s 106–101 Thursday win over the Miami Heat and had 13 points, three 3-pointers and four rebounds in Sunday’s 130–118 loss at Phoenix. Harrison Ingram played 4:32 in Sunday’s game, contributing two points and two rebounds.

Cameron Johnson has combined for 21 points in the last three games as his slow start in Denver continues. His best game was a nine-point, six-rebound effort in Friday’s 109–107 loss to Portland.

Tony Bradley scored a total of 13 points in three games last week, topped by his six-point, eight-rebound effort Wednesday in Indiana’s 107–105 loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

Coby White remains out for the Chicago Bulls as he recovers from a strained calf.
