Tyson scores 30, Nickel 20 in openers; Cadeau dishes out 12 assists

By R.L. Bynum

Cade Tyson seems to have found early success in Minnesota that eluded him during his one season at Carolina.

Tyson poured in 30 points, one off his career-high (31 for Belmont against Samford on Dec. 16, 2023), and four 3-pointers in the Gophers’ 87–69 opening-game victory Monday over Gardner-Webb.

He was 10 of 12 from the free throw line and added three rebounds, two assists and a steal and eclipsed 1,000 career points (now at at 1,023).

“Sometimes fit matters,” said Coach Niko Medved after winning his Minnesota debut. “That doesn’t mean that North Carolina wasn’t the right fit for him last year. We thought this was a great fit for our type of guy. He’s been really consistent the entire summer, and as he’s gotten more and more comfortable with wIahat we’re doing.”

It was Tyson’s 12th career game with at least four 3-pointers (none against power conference schools), but only one of those came with UNC (five against LaSalle). His high in 3-pointers (two) and points (6) against power conference schools came against N.C. State.

Tyson easily had the best game of the former UNC players who opened their seasons on Monday night.

Tyler Nickel, in his second season at Vanderbilt, scored 20 points and six 3-pointers in the Commodores’ 105–61 home win over Lipscomb. Nickel came one 3 short of his career-high of seven last season at Texas A&M. His high as a Tar Heel was three against The Citadel, but Monday was his 12th game with at least four 3-pointers since transferring from UNC.

In his debut with Vandy, Jalen Washington played 17 minutes off the bench with nine points, two rebounds, two assists and a block.

Ian Jackson had an efficient night in St. John’s 108–74 home win over Quinnipiac, making all six shots, including three from 3-point range, for 15 points.

Elliott Cadeau dished out 12 assists in Michigan’s 121–78 home victory over Oakland. It was his fifth career game with at least 12 assists and came one short of his career-high of 13 last season against Wake Forest. Cadeau had five points on 2 of 7 shooting but pulled down five rebounds.

In Ven-Allen Lubin’s debut at N.C. State, a 114–66 home win over N.C. Central, he started and collected 10 points and six rebounds in 19 minutes.

Will Shaver had five points and three rebounds in 10 minutes off the bench in his Samford debut, an 85–72 loss at Tulane.

Tray Crisp started for Mississippi State in her debut there, a 66–57 home win over Davidson, and had three points and four fouls in 22 minutes.

Senior Teonni Key had five points, six rebounds and four blocks for Kentucky in its 75–59 home win over Morehead State.
