No matter what numbers Drake Maye puts up, he just keeps winning.
Maye led New England to a 28–16 victory Sunday at Tampa Bay for the 8–2 Patriots’ seventh consecutive win, giving them a 1½-game lead atop the AFC East.
His streak of eight consecutive games with at least 200 yards passing and a passer rating of 100 ended. The streak tied Tom Brady’s as the longest in franchise history and was the longest for a player younger than 24.
Maye finished 16 of 31 for 270 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. His passer rating of 89.5 was his lowest since an 80.6 in a Week 1 home loss to the Los Angeles Raiders.
The Patriots trailed early before Maye tied it on a 72-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Williams late in the first quarter — the longest pass of Maye’s career and the longest Patriots touchdown play this season.
“Kyle got out the back door. You know, he’s fast. You’re not gonna catch him,” Maye said. “He only got maybe one target and made it count. Just proud of him for getting in there.”
On the last play of the first half, facing fourth-and-goal at the Bucs’ 1, Maye lofted a pass in the corner of the end zone to Stefon Diggs, who got his toes inbounds for a touchdown to give the Patriots a 14–10 halftime lead.
“Shoot, didn’t get in the first three times,” Maye said. “Stef made a great play. That was a toe tap extraordinaire.”
New England coach Mike Vrabel said that moment was pivotal.
“That was a huge, huge play for us. On fourth down, I’ve got confidence in our guys,” Vrabel said. “I was really excited and proud of Stef and Drake for scoring where we were and being able to end the half with the football in our hands.”
Maye, although only sacked once, took a beating late during a drive in which he connected on a third-and-14 for 56 yards to Hollins, becoming the first Patriot to throw two passes of at least 50 yards since Brady did it in 2017.
Hollins, who came into the game with 16 catches for 208 yards on the season, caught six passes on 10 targets for 106 yards. It was his best game since catching eight passes for 158 yards in a 24-22 loss to the Tennessee Titans in 2022 while playing for the Los Angeles Raiders.
That drive ended with Maye throwing an interception in the end zone on third-and-goal at the Bucs’ 2.
“You gotta be mad at yourself,” Maye said. “But you know that you have a chance either to go on a two-minute drill to win the game, or go in a five-minute scenario to win the game. That’s this league — just bouncing back from it, flipping the page.”
Maye said the win was about grit.
“Just so proud of this team. Every week we’re fighting, some things aren’t going our way. We’re handling adversity. Battle adversity, defense is stepping up,” Maye said.
It’s a quick turnaround for the Patriots, who host the New York Jets at 8:15 Thursday night (Prime Video).
