Injuries: Kelly played limited minutes in the first two games (likely still working her way back from a right knee injury last season), and sophomore Blanca Thomas (undisclosed injury) hasn’t played in either game or the Tar Heels’ exhibition game. Thomas was wearing uniform shorts as the team watched Thursday’s first game from the stands .Harris spent a good amount of time on an exercise bike during Thursday’s 73–37 win over Elon. Freshman UCLA forward Sienna Betts, the No. 2 player in the Class of 2025 and Lauren Betts’ sister, missed the Oklahoma game with a lower-leg injury and Close said Wednesday that she and Timea Gardiner will miss the game.
Battle of the centers:
Lauren Betts vs. Ciera Toomey. Toomey gives up three inches in a challenging matchup and must play good defense without fouling to stay in the game (particularly if Thomas can’t play). Betts only had nine points on 4 of 11 shooting against Oklahoma, with 10 rebounds.
Nivar vs. Rice: UNC’s defensive stopper will need to limit Rice’s production.
3-point shooting: Carolina has several good 3-point shooters, but the Tar Heels made only 12 of 46 attempts (26.1%) in the first two games. If multiple players get hot from the perimeter, UNC could pull the upset. A bad UNC shooting night could make it a long night. Jaquez (43.8%), Dugalić (36.4%) and Kneepkens (35.0%) are all 3-point threats.
Rebounding: UCLA’s height will give it a huge advantage under the boards, and the Tar Heels will need to rebound well.
Carolina defense: The Tar Heels have held the last four opponents under 50 points. That won’t likely happen on Thursday, but UNC needs to force turnovers to ignite its transition game. Oklahoma forced UCLA into 17 turnovers.
Transfer power: Utah transfer Kneepkens and Washington State 5–10 transfer Charlisse Leger-Walker, granted a fifth season, bring veteran scoring to UCLA.
