Coby White hits 27, clutch shots in season debut; 22 for Davis, 34 for Nance in G League

By R.L. Bynum

The long-awaited season debut for Coby White was one to remember.

Not looking at all rusty after missing the preseason and the first 11 games while recovering from a right calf strain, White collected 27 points, eight assists and four rebounds in the Chicago Bulls’ 150–147 double-overtime road loss Sunday night to the Utah Jazz.

He was effective from the start, scoring a corner 3-pointer on a baseline out-of-bounds play the first time he touched the ball.

White, who put up a game score of 22.8, was expected to be on a limit of 20 minutes, but ended up playing more than 30. For injury management reasons, he isn’t expected to play in Monday night’s game in Denver.

His 3-pointer with 2:27 left in regulation gave Chicago a three-point lead.

White’s driving layup beat the buzzer to force the second overtime. His layup with 2:56 left in the second overtime and two free throws with 8.4 seconds left tied it, but Keyonte George won it for Utah on a 3-pointer with two seconds left.

White made 3 of 14 3-point attempts and all 14 free-throw attempts in 30 minutes coming off the bench. Chicago could use his help after the Bulls’ fifth consecutive loss dropped them to 6–6.

In only the South Bay Lakers’ third game of the G League season, RJ Davis scored 22 points with two 3-pointers, seven rebounds and seven assists in their 113–111 victory Sunday over the Rip City Remix.

Pete Nance broke loose for 34 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the Wisconsin Herd’s 110–109 victory Saturday over the Cleveland Charge. Herd teammate Cormac Ryan scored 17 points in Monday’s 127–104 loss to the Windy City Bulls, but missed the team’s other two games with an ankle injury.

Harrison Barnes had one of his best games of the season Sunday night with 20 points and three 3-pointers in San Antonio’s 123–110 victory over Sacramento for a 19.4 game score.

Barnes is shooting 91.3% from the free-throw line (his career-best was 86.1% in 2016-17; tied for fifth in the league), 54.2% from the floor (career best 50.8% last season) and 48.5% from 3-point range (career-best 43.3% last season).
