The breakout performances keep coming for Cade Tyson at Minnesota, while Ian Jackson’s transition to playing back home at St. John’s hasn’t gone that smoothly early on.
Tyson carried his team to victory Saturday, and Jackson came off the bench with an uncertain role.
Tyson poured in 27 points and three 3-pointers and pulled down five rebounds Saturday night before fouling out in the final minute of overtime of Minnesota’s 72–65 home victory over Green Bay.
No other player for the Gophers (3–1) scored in double figures despite the game going to overtime. While the rest of the team was 10 of 25 from the free-throw line, Tyson was 10 of 14.
Tyson split a pair of free throws with nine seconds left in regulation to give Minnesota a two-point lead before a driving layup at the buzzer by Green Bay’s Preston Reudinger sent the game into overtime.
It was the third time in four games that Tyson has scored at least 20 points after scoring 30 against Gardner-Webb on opening night. He’s averaging 23.8 points while shooting 55.3% from the floor and 40% from 3-point range.
Tyson, who scored 16 points after halftime, pushed his career point total to 1,088.
Jackson scored nine points in 16 reserve minutes in No. 13 St. John’s 93–69 home victory over William & Mary, going 3 of 8 from the floor and 1 of 5 from 3-point range with three rebounds, two turnovers and a steal.
In a 24-point victory, Jackson, who has started in one of the three games for St. John’s (2–1), was +1.

St. John’s coach Rick Pitino said in the offseason that Jackson would be his point guard, but that job so far has gone to Idaho State transfer Dylan Darling, who had 13 points against the Tribe in his first start.
“I think Ian Jackson is a great basketball player,” Pitino said. “He’s a little careless, but he will grow out of that. I try to play the best player regardless of reputation. I’m not coaching by reputation … I don’t care what you did before; I’m playing the best five guys.”
Vanderbilt (4–0) rolled to a 92–62 home victory Saturday over Eastern Kentucky, with Tyler Nickel nearly getting a double-double with 11 points, three 3-pointers and eight rebounds. After starting the previous game, Jalen Washington came off the bench and had four points, six rebounds and two blocks in 14 minutes.
Also on Saturday, Teonni Key scored 10 points, pulled down four rebounds, had two assists and a block in No. 23 Kentucky’s 76–44 win at Marshall.
Get a rundown here of how the transfers fared last week in games played before Saturday.
