Facing double-teams, Tyson scores season-low 14 in loss; Key hits 17 in big UK win at Louisville

By R.L. Bynum

Cade Tyson learned Saturday night what life is like when you’re at the top of an opponent’s scouting report.

After leading Minnesota in scoring in each of its first five games, Tyson (who was second in the Big Ten in scoring through five games with a 23.4 average) was held to a season low of 14 points in a season-high 39 minutes as the Gophers lost to San Francisco 77–65 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Dons (5–1) double-teamed Tyson and tried to deny him the ball. The strategy worked early: Tyson managed just two shots and five points in 19 first-half minutes. He found more opportunities after halftime, but nothing close to his early-season production for Minnesota (4–2).

For the first time this season, Tyson didn’t lead the scoring for the Gophers, with Langston Reynolds leading the way with 16 points. Tyson shot 50% from the floor and the perimeter, but got off a season-low eight shots and a season-low two 3-point attempts.

Minnesota, which was without center Robert Vailoa (knee injury), played an eight-man rotation, which led to Tyson’s big minutes. Poor free-throw shooting (15 of 30) did in the Gophers, but Tyson was 5 of 7 at the line.

Teonni Key tied her season high with a game-high 17 points, and had eight rebounds and four blocks in No. 20 Kentucky’s 72–62 road victory Saturday over No. 21 Louisville. It was her seventh career game with at least four blocks and her second time with four this season.

Key’s three-point play with 17 seconds left in the first half gave the Wildcats (7–0) a 37–35 halftime lead.

It continues to be a struggle for SMU, where Coach Adia Barnes and Paulina Paris are in their first season with the Mustangs after coming over from Arizona in the offseason.

Paris scored a season-high 12 points for the second consecutive game, both coming off the bench after starting the previous games. But the Mustangs fell to 1–4 with a 58–55 home loss to North Texas, their fourth consecutive loss.

Paris tied it at 53 on two free throws with 2:39 left and scored on a driving layup to cut SMU’s deficit to one with 10 seconds left, but North Texas put the game away with a pair of free throws.

Paris was 2 of 5 from 3-point range after going 1 of 14 in the first four games, and she has one assist and seven turnovers on the season.

In other games:
— RyLee Grays had a rebound in five scoreless minutes Saturday as Tulsa moved to 5–0 with a 73–57 home victory over Missouri State.
— Will Shaver played six scoreless minutes Friday night as Samford fell to 3–4 with an 81–72 road loss to New Mexico State.
