Maye delivers again with 2 TD passes in 10th straight Pats win

By R.L. Bynum

There were more amazing passes for Drake Maye, more “MVP” chants in the New England Patriots’ 10th consecutive victory.

It bookended nicely a long Week 13 that included a solid Thanksgiving Day game for Javonte Williams in a Dallas Cowboys victory.

On the big Monday Night Football stage, Maye threw for 282 yards and two touchdowns as the Patriots weren’t challenged by the New York Giants in an easy 33–15 victory.

New England heads into an open date next weekend with an NFL-best 11–2 record and a 2½-game lead over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East.

Maye had a bigger streak at Myers Park High School with 13 straight wins, which he could very well equal this season.

“But this is a different beast. This is the NFL,” said Maye, who put up 20.48 fantasy points and, according to DraftKings, is now the MVP favorite at -135, with Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford next at +125.

It was Maye’s sixth game thie season completing at least least 75% of his passes while throwing at least two touchdown passes. That ties Matt Ryan (2016) for the third most such games in a season in NFL history after Tom Brady (2007) and Jared Goff last season.

From the start, the Patriots came out firing.

“It started with Coach saying no naps,” Maye said. “You want to come in here and start fast. We know this team has been up in a lot of games, and they had good players over there… we wanted to try to get on fast.”

Marcus Jones’ 94-yard punt return for a touchdown helped set the tone, and Maye said all three phases “showed up at different points.”

Maye made big throws and pinpoint passes all night as the Patriots became the first team this season to earn 11 victories.

He hit Hunter Henry for a 36-yard pass to the Giants 5. At the end of a five-play, 61-yard drive, Maye dropped a pass perfectly over the shoulder of Kayshon Boutte in the right side of the end zone — as if he was dropping the ball in a bucket — on a 3-yard touchdown pass with 1:04 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Maye showed off his accuracy again, dropping a 33-yard pass over the shoulder of Kyle Williams in the left side of the end zone for another score with 3:35 left.

Maye threw for 207 first-half yards, a career-high for one half.

“Got some play designs that coach had, and we practiced all week that worked.” He admitted the Giants’ new defensive coordinator brought “some stuff that we didn’t expect,” but praised his offensive line for handling “a great rush, great players up front.”

As for his role in the offense, Maye embraces the responsibility.

“Just trying to be the face. Try to be the conductor,” he said. “You want the pressure. You want the ball in my hands, and I’ve tried to show that all year. They feed off of me and feed off my energy.”

The Patriots didn’t let up after halftime, but Maye was frustrated that they couldn’t find the end zone after halftime.

“We need to do a better job in the second half of putting them out of reach and getting them across midfield and putting the drive together and score touchdowns,” he said.

With backups at left tackle and left guard, Maye expressed confidence in his offensive line.

“I had full faith in them,” he said. “They’ve stepped up all year. Proud of them for working hard and learning this offense and staying on the same page.”

The win was especially important heading into the open date.

“You don’t want to leave off on the bye on a bad foot with a whole Monday night game,” Maye said. “It was important for us to show up for our fans, and the bye week’s huge. It felt like a long time coming.”

Mack Hollins started and caught three of four passes targeted to him for 23 yards, including an 11-yard reception.
