North Carolina moved up one spot to No. 11 in the the latest AP Top 25 women’s basketball poll and is 13th in the first NET ranking after three impressive victories on successive days to win the Cancun Challenge last week. But it faces a considerable challenge ahead this week.
The Tar Heels (8–1) beat South Dakota State 83–48, Kansas State 84–73 and Columbia 80–63 in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
Tournament MVP Indya Nivar is the ACC Player of the Week after producing the second triple-double in program history, averaging 12.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 6.7 steals and 6.0 assists while shooting 53.6% in three Cancun games.
Carolina, which returned the ranking it held in the first two polls of the season, has been No. 14 or higher for 13 consecutive weeks, the longest such stretch since doing so for 16 straight weeks from Feb. 17, 2014, to Jan. 19, 2015.
UNC leapfrogged undefeated Iowa (8–0), which fell one spot to No. 12.

The Tar Heels visit Texas (8–0), which moved up two spots to No. 2, at 7 p.m. Thursday (ESPN2) in the ACC/SEC Women’s Challenge.
The Longhorns earned two two huge victories last week, with a 76–65 victory over UCLA (down one spot to No. 4), which gave UNC its only loss (78–60 in Las Vegas on Nov. 13), and a 66–64 victory over South Carolina (down one spot to No. 3), which beat the Tar Heels in a preseason exhibition game (91–82 in Atlanta on Oct. 30).
Those were the only losses by teams that were ahead of UNC in last week’s poll.
Carolina remains the highest-ranked among the three ACC teams in the poll, with No. 18 Notre Dame (5–1) and No. 22 Louisville (7–2) both moving up one spot.
N.C. State (5–3) was No. 25 last week but fell out of the poll with the 26th-most poll points.
UNC also has the best NET ranking among ACC teams at 13th, followed by Louisville (14th), Stanford (23rd), Notre Dame (32nd), Virginia (34th), N.C. State (39th), Syracuse (41st), Clemson (44th), Duke (49th), Miami (50th), Virginia Tech (55th), California (72nd), Florida State (87th), Wake Forest (95th), Georgia Tech (103rd), Boston College (172nd), SMU (204th) and Pittsburgh (241st).
