Drake Maye showed flashes of brilliance and resilience in New England’s 35–31 loss to Buffalo on Sunday, a game that started with promise but ended in frustration.
Meanwhile, Javonte Williams, Michael Carter and Omarion Hampton had productive rushing days, with Williams and Josh Downs scoring touchdowns.
Maye helped the Patriots build a commanding 24–7 halftime lead, rushing for two touchdowns and completing 14 of 23 passes for 155 yards. His ability to extend plays and execute designed runs gave the offense early rhythm, and the Patriots looked in control.
But the second half told a different story. Buffalo stormed back with five consecutive touchdown drives, flipping momentum and leaving Maye searching for answers after the Patriots’ 10-game win streak ended.
Maye threw for a season-low 155 yards, had a season-low 62.8 passer rating and went without a touchdown pass for only the second time this season. He didn’t shy away from accountability.
“Came out of the second half and just got to make a play, pick up the first first down,” he said. “Got to keep the foot on the pedal and keep it going and don’t let them dictate. We had the ball and the chance to win the game.”
Maye ran for two first-quarter touchdowns, on runs of eight and seven yards, after running for only two all season before Sunday.
He became the first Patriots quarterback to run for at least two touchdowns since Cam Newton did it four times in 2020. It was the 17th time a New England quarterback has run for two touchdowns in a game.
Despite the sting of a blown lead, Maye emphasized that the Patriots need to focus on next week’s Sunday night game at Baltimore (NBC).
“Move on to the next week and learn from it,” he said. “Don’t just hang our head. It was a long stretch where we were feeling good about ourselves. Now it’s about responding from losing to a good team.”
Mack Hollins started and had four catches on eight targets for 41 yards, including an 18-yard reception.
New England (11–3) still has a one-game lead over Buffalo in the AFC East.

In the Dallas Cowboys’ 34–29 Sunday night home loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Williams ran for 91 yards and a touchdown, including a 21-yard gain. Williams score came on a one-yard run with 8:23 left in the first quarter.
It was Williams’ fifth game this season with at least 90 rushing yards.
Williams came out of the game late in the first quarter with a shoulder injury and returned early in the third quarter but that limited him to 20 offensive snaps.
Carter had 14 carries for 56 yards and four catches for 38 yards in Arizona’s 40–20 loss to Houston.
Hampton came off the bench to rush 15 times for 61 yards, including a 26-yard run, in the Los Angeles Chargers’ 16–13 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Downs has four touchdown receptions on the season after catching an eight-yard pass with 1:33 left in the second quarter from former N.C. State quarterback Philip Rivers in his unlikely return to the NFL. The Colts lost to Seattle 18–16.
In other action:
— Tennessee linebacker Cedric Gray had another big day with seven tackles and nine assists.
— Houston running back British Brooks had one assist on kickoff coverage, playing 14 of his 17 snaps on special teams.
— Atlanta cornerback Mike Hughes suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter after playing only nine snaps, and didn’t return.
— Jacksonville wide receiver Dyami Brown fumbled on his only carry, which went for four yards. The Jags didn’t recover the fumble. He played six total snaps.
— Tampa Bay offensive lineman Charlie Heck reported tackle-eligible on all five of his offensive snaps.
— Pittsburgh linebacker Cole Holcomb had one tackle on kickoff coverage in the Steelers’ 28–15 Monday night win over Miami, playing nine special-teams snaps.
— Baltimore wide receiver Tez Walker started, playing 25 offensive snaps and four special-teams snaps.
— Neither Philadelphia quarterback Sam Howell nor New Orleans offensive lineman Asim Richards were active for their games, and Buffalo quarterback Mitch Trubisky didn’t play.
