UNC, projected as a 4 seed, falls in the NET after its third Quad 1 victory

By R.L. Bynum

The NET rankings can fluctuate wildly early in the season and lead to surprising changes.

That was the case for No. 12-ranked North Carolina (11–1) when the Tar Heels fell four spots to 19 in the NET rankings after Saturday night’s 71–70 Quad 1 victory in the CBS Sports Classic in Atlanta over Ohio State.

With the Buckeyes’ NET ranking only dropping to 47 the victory will stay Quad 1 for now. But it would become Quad 2 if that falls below 50.

The consensus of the 35 projections that Bracket Matrix lists is for UNC to be a low No. 4 seed, with seven projecting the Tar Heels as high as a No. 3 seed and one listing them as a No. 6 seed. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has UNC as a 5 seed.

UNC plays its final Quad 4 game of the season on Monday at 8 p.m., facing East Carolina (5–7) at the Smith Center (ACC Network). The Pirates’ NET ranking of 289 is the third-worst on Carolina’s schedule behind Radford (298) and N.C. Central (350).

The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.

Quadrant 1 (UNC is 3–1; 8 games left): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC is 10; 6 games left): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC is 2–0; 4 games left): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC is 5–0; 1 games left): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower

All of UNC’s remaining games didn’t change designation based on the weekend games, with eight remaining Quad 1 games, six Quad 2 games and four Quad 3 games.

No. 11 Louisville (10–2) now has the second-best NET ranking in the ACC at 15 after a 94–54 win over Montana.

No. 3 Duke (11–1) fell two spots to 4 after the Blue Devils’ 82–81 loss at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night to No. 19 Texas Tech.
