North Carolina’s NET ranking held at 22 after its 87–84 home Quad 2 victory Saturday over Wake Forest, but the number of opportunities to polish its resume increased due to other results.
Thanks to Saturday road wins by Syracuse (12–5, 3–1) and Clemson (15–3, 5–0), the No. 17 Tar Heels (14–3, 2–1 ACC) have two additional Quad 1 games ahead. UNC (3–2 in Quad 1 games) now has 10 Quad 1 games left in the regular season (based on its current classifications).
The Orange’s 83–72 win Saturday boosted their NET ranking to 67, making UNC’s Feb. 21 visit to Syracuse Quad 1 and boosting the Feb. 2 home game against Syracuse from Quad 3 to Quad 2. Clemson’s 76–61 win Saturday at Notre Dame moved the Tigers’ NET ranking to 28, making the March 3 home game against the Tigers a Quad 1.
That means that five of Carolina’s last six regular-season games are currently classified as Quad 1. In addition to the game at Syracuse and the home game against Clemson, there is the Feb. 17 game at N.C. State (12–5, 3–1; NET ranking of 31), the Feb. 23 home game against No. 20 Louisville (12–5, 2–3; 20) and the regular-season finale at No. 6 Duke (15–1, 4–0; 3).
The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.
NCAA quadrant system
Quadrant 1 (UNC is 6–8): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC is 5–0): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC is 8–0): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC is 5–0): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower

Three of UNC’s next four games are Quad 1, starting with this week’s West Coast trip that features games against Stanford (13–4, 2–1) at 9 p.m. Wednesday and California (13–4, 1–3) at 4 p.m. Saturday, both airing on ACC Network. The NET rankings of both could easily fall below the 75 threshold for a Quad 1 game, though, with the Cardinal sitting at 69 and the Bears at 67 and each also facing Duke this week.
After a Quad 2 home game Jan. 21 against Notre Dame (10–7, 1–3; NET ranking of 76), the Tar Heels visit No. 22 Virginia (15–2, 4–1; 16) on Jan. 24 for another Quad 1 game.
The consensus of the 58 bracket projections on Bracket Matrix has UNC as the lowest No. 4 seed, with four projections listing the Tar Heels as a No. 6 seed. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has UNC as the top No. 5 seed.
